SM Celebrates Women’s Empowerment and Hosts a Webinar on the Role of Women in Disaster Resilience

SM Supermalls and its corporate social responsibility arm, SM Cares, in collaboration with the International Women’s Network on Disaster Risk Reduction and the Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies-Philippines hosted a webinar on the importance of women in disaster resilience on National Women’s Day 2022 Month.

“As we learn today from diverse women leading resilience initiatives, may it ignite in each of us the strength to overcome adversity and a renewed drive to create a sustainable future for all of us,” said SM Supermalls Chairman Steven Tan in his welcome address at the forum, which was held on March 30 via Zoom and Facebook Live.

In her keynote address, Mami Mizutori, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, highlighted: “the equal participation of women and their leadership in public life, including disaster risk reduction, is important, and it is also essential for reducing disaster risk in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.”

Vasiti Soko, Director of the National Disaster Management Organization in Fiji, spoke about inclusiveness in disaster risk reduction and the empowerment of women in government disaster risk reduction (DRR) programs Fijian.

Zamboanga City Mayor Maria Isabelle “Beng” Climaco-Salazar spoke about how women could help build disaster-resilient cities. In the city of Zamboanga, the promotion of female leadership in policy-making has been demonstrated by the appointment of more women in leadership positions.

UN Women WeEmpowerAsia Philippines Country Program Manager Ma. Rosalyn “Len Len” Mesina discussed pathways to ensure gender equality in promoting DRR and resilience.
