Promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment through micro-grant projects in Armenia

In May-December 2021, with the support of the Council of Europe, small grants projects were successfully implemented in three regions of Armenia by the following NGOs: Armavir Development Centre, SOSE Women’s NGO and Martuni Women’s Community Council. The small grants projects aimed to raise awareness about gender equality, gender-based violence and domestic violence, and the empowerment of women.

These projects have achieved substantial results in providing information on existing support and protection services for women victims of gender-based violence, access to justice and the rights of women victims/survivors of violence. This was achieved through different events, advice, art therapy, exhibitions, training, materials and visibility tools. Various communication channels were used, including social media, radio, television, mainstream media and public advertising.

Gender equality and women’s empowerment have been promoted through sensitization of target groups, vocational trainings and work placements aimed at ensuring a sustainable future income for women, including survivors of violence, displaced women in the interior of the country or women in a vulnerable position, and by enabling women to know their rights. The activities helped women to reclaim their lives and integrate into communities.

Seventy female survivors of domestic violence and displaced women learned new professional skills in bookkeeping, computers, sewing and cooking, gaining self-confidence, empowerment and gaining a clear vision of how to to be economically independent. About 15% of these women have now found relevant employment or are self-employed.

30 targeted women received psychosocial services to develop the necessary coping skills, which help women to regain ownership of their lives and integrate into communities, to be self-sufficient and independent and, therefore, to be empowered to stand up against any type of violence.

Thanks to awareness-raising activities carried out by the NGO Martuni Women’s Community Council in the Gegharkunik region, about 15,000 people were informed about domestic violence as a problem for the region, women’s rights and legal regulations in this area. .

The small grants projects were implemented within the framework of the Council of Europe project “The way towards the ratification by Armenia of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against against women and domestic violence”.
