The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has pledged to ensure that a policeman suspected of raping and impregnating his niece in Nasarawa State is prosecuted to deter other sex offenders.

Nasarawa FIDA President, Ms. Rabiatu Addra made the revelation while speaking to reporters on Wednesday in Lafia, the state capital.

She said a whistleblower reported to them that the 15-year-old victim had been repeatedly raped by an uncle she was staying with after her father died.

She said that upon receipt of the whistleblower’s report, IFAD, in collaboration with the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Response Team, facilitated and mobilized the police, which led to the arrest of the suspect.

“Our team with the police took the victim to hospital and paid for her treatment but unfortunately she lost the six-month-old baby.

“The state Department of Justice has additionally footed the bill for a DNA test as part of the ongoing investigation to determine the true culprit,” the FIDA president added.

She said the victim was discharged from hospital and is now safe and reunited with his family.

Ms Rabiatu Addra said the group would not stop until justice was served and appealed to the police to ensure a thorough investigation into the matter.

She therefore stated that the team is always ready and prepared to promote, protect and serve the rights of women and children while calling on victims of abuse to speak out.
